Where I live, in Pennsylvania, most people are in the transitional style category. The Craftsman, super chunky, wood has not caught on around here. We also don't really have too many contemporary homes either. Transitional style fits around here because most homes are colonial homes. In the past 30 years, it's gone to an open concept of the colonial home, but it's still a colonial home. While we may like or love a certain look, it's typically a good idea to stay in the style of the home, thus traditional/transitional. Transitional mixes modern with tradition. You can also have transitional/farmhouse, which tries to bring in the farmhouse to your already transitioned home. How to achieve this balance can be tricky, but here are my tips:
1) Buy a sofa that is timeless, meaning not a period piece. Keep this piece as neutral as possible. You can bring in all of the elements of your decor with pillows, rug and wall decor.
2) Chairs can have color, or texture. I love a slipcovered chair that you can change out. I also love the idea of having a leather chair to add texture.
3) Mirrors can help with the feel of whatever transition you're trying to accomplish.
4) Don't skimp on good lighting! A light fixture on your ceiling is a great way to add excitement to any space. You will need up lighting and floor lighting and please get warm lights.
