DIY instructions for painting your vinyl windows

I first want to say that this is NOT recommended by anyone! Sure you can paint it, but it's not recommended by the manufacturer....

This is how the vinyl was looking on the sliding glass door, so I decided to paint it...

It's a bit tricky to see the dirty greyish bubbles in the picture, but it was driving me crazy.

1) The first step I did was to wash with a surface prep. This wash takes away all the grime, leaving a fresh surface to paint.

2) The second step is to prep the surface with a primer. This primer leaves a chalky sticky finish that grasps the paint.

3) The 3rd step would be to tape off the widow and where you want the lines to end on your molding.

4) Now for the paint... I used Behr exterior satin enamel paint and primer. This paint says it can be used on vinyl. I painted the entire surface and went back a second time. I let it dry overnight.

5) The next day, I did a quick sanding with 120 grit. and also recleaned the area with the surface prep.

6) The next step is to put your third coat of paint on, but this time, lightly go over with a foam roller so you get a smooth surface.

No matter how hard you try, there will be lines that need touching up. I recommend using artist brushes with your trim paint to fix them.
